How ThunderCat races work
The ATRF was set up to introduce, develop and govern ThunderCat powerboat racing in the United States. Its 2026 rulebook:
- Inflatable tunnel-hull boats only, crewed by a driver and a co-driver
- Outboard engines with tiller steering
- Stock and Modified classes, scored separately
- A race is at least two heats (three or more preferred), each about five miles and at least three laps
The rulebook lists Fuel 1 racing fuel as the approved fuel. At Englewood Beach, ATRF ThunderCat racing runs twice a day on October 10 and 11, right off the sand.
ThunderCats also race under the American Power Boat Association (APBA), separately from the ATRF. APBA's Superlight Tunnel (SLT) class is listed as Thundercat racing (opens in a new tab).
